French collective Radio Byzance collaborate with Glasgow-based MC Soom T on “Dangerous Times,” a track that blends dub, reggae, and electronic elements to reflect the political and social tensions of the present. Taken from their second full-length release Just Cross the River, the track is grounded in deep, spacious production and a direct vocal performance.
Centred around a slow, driving bassline and dub-inflected rhythms, the arrangement gives Soom T space to deliver her words with clarity and intent. Her lyrics speak to inequality and systemic breakdowns, highlighting global tensions without resorting to cliché. Co-written with Radio Byzance members Alban Landais (Kaïdo), Chloé Netter (D.S), and Camille Pellerin (Ajna), the track weaves pointed commentary into a richly layered soundscape.
The group’s style spans a broad spectrum. Known for blending live instruments—violin, saxophone, percussion—with electronic textures, they’ve shaped a sound that feels both expansive and grounded. Since their 2020 debut Positive Wave, they’ve continued to evolve through touring and collaboration, refining a hybrid approach that resists easy categorisation.
“Dangerous Times” captures that development. The arrangement is restrained but detailed, carrying weight without overstatement. Soom T brings urgency to the mix, yet the energy remains controlled—more tension than release. It’s a track that speaks to the moment, but also reflects the wider aims of Just Cross the River: border-crossing, contrast-embracing, and rooted in purposeful creation over surface polish.
