On a foggy November weekend in 2020, Orquestra Pacífico Tropical gathered at a beachside cabin on the Oregon coast and started writing what would become El Poder, their third album, out 19th June. “Entre La Montaña,” the second single, takes that coastal mood and sharpens it into a walk toward ancestry, searching for the empathy, compassion, and patience that feel harder to hold onto now. The title means “Enter The Mountain,” and the lyrics do exactly that. “We enter the mountain, where our ancestors dwell. There, we speak to them and talk about the past, present and future.”
The Portland band formed in 2012 when drummer David “Papi” Fimbres and guitarist Carlos Segovia decided to take their Latin dance night, Double Latinum Platinum, further. Both had been part of the city’s music scene since 2000, and they built the band by pulling in musicians from across Portland’s network. Over 13 years, roughly 19 members have passed through the lineup. Their sound draws from Colombian and Peruvian cumbia, pulling in salsa, psychedelic rock, and brass band energy.
“Entre La Montaña” was recorded in Portland on vintage gear. The video follows band members walking into the mountains of northwest Portland to the Witch Castle, a local landmark the band say reflects both the song’s urgency and their connection to the city.
Orquestra Pacífico Tropical play the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland on 4th July and Pickathon in Happy Valley on 31st July, with a west coast tour and an appearance on Seattle’s KEXP also planned for 2026.
