MOMO., the stage name of Marcelo Frota, is a Brazilian artist originally from Rio de Janeiro who now calls London home. His musical journey has taken him through various countries, including Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, each leaving a mark on his artistry. His latest album, Gira, released in October under Batov Records, is his seventh project.
The album opens with the captivating track “Pára,” featuring the soulful keyboard work of Jessica Lauren. Unlike his previous works, this album was recorded live at Total Refreshment Centre, capturing the spontaneous energy and connection of a live performance.
Marcelo regards Gira as a reflection of his varied experiences and the rich cultures he has encountered throughout his life. His musical style is a unique fusion of Brazilian rhythms—especially those inspired by the tropicália movement—intertwined with elements of contemporary jazz and global influences.
As a vibrant celebration of joy and collaboration, Gira showcases the talents of musicians from the London jazz scene. It embodies Marcelo’s new life in London and represents a significant evolution in his sound, blending the influences of Brazil’s tropicália and bossa nova with a jazzy London flair.
