Daily Discovery: Marisa Monte e ‪Gilberto Gil – A Paz (Ao Vivo)

Captured live during Gilberto Gil’s Tempo Rei farewell tour, “A Paz” unites two of Brazil’s most enduring voices—Gil and longtime collaborator Marisa Monte—for a stripped-down, emotionally resonant rendition of a classic. Co-written by Gil and João Donato in the 1980s and reinterpreted on Gil’s 1994 Unplugged, this new live version pares the arrangement back to voice, guitar, and space.

Recorded at Rio de Janeiro’s Farmasi Arena on 29 March, the performance highlights Gil’s warm, rhythmic guitar and relaxed vocal delivery, with Monte offering tonal clarity and subtle counterpoint. Their vocal interplay is unfussy and instinctive, letting the melodic strength and message of peace carry the weight.

They are joined by Bem Gil on bass and José Gil on drums—Gil’s sons and key members of his touring ensemble. Their playing anchors the performance without overshadowing its intimacy, lending the arrangement a gentle, steady pulse that supports its reflective tone.

Rooted in the tradition of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) yet timeless in its appeal, this rendition of “A Paz” is a quiet standout—intimate, assured, and a fitting reflection on Gil’s legacy.
