Manu Chao‘s latest single “São Paulo Motoboy,” from his forthcoming album Viva Tu, is a tribute to the motorcycle couriers of São Paulo, Brazil. The song, with its laid-back rhythm, tells the tale of a courier weaving through the city’s traffic to keep his job, highlighting both the peril and perseverance required in this line of work.
The lyrics delve into the demanding and dangerous aspects of the couriers’ lives, highlighting the essential speed and urgency needed to manoeuvre congested streets, handle adverse weather, and recover from accidents. The song portrays these couriers as vital yet often underestimated figures in the city’s dynamic.
The accompanying video, from the viewpoint of a motorcyclist, captures the courier’s rapid journey through traffic. Drawing from his own experiences as a former courier in Paris, Manu Chao describes São Paulo as a “breathing beast,” with its couriers as the crucial lifeline.
The single’s release will be followed by a documentary that delves into the daily lives of São Paulo’s motorcycle couriers, providing further context to the song’s themes.
Viva Tu, Chao’s first album in 17 years, includes tracks in Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English, featuring collaborations with artists like Willie Nelson and Laeti. Inspired by his global travels and interactions, the album is scheduled for release on the 20th of September via Radio Bemba / Because Music.
