Daily Discovery: Luiz Simas – Canção dos Povos Originarios

“Canção dos Povos Originários” is a composition by Luiz Simas that celebrates Brazil’s indigenous cultures. The lyrics uniquely consist of the names of indigenous tribes, chanted in a style that echoes traditional tribal music patterns.

The song incorporates ambient pop, jazz, and sounds imitating the Amazon Rainforest to produce a reflective, mantra-like ambiance. Luiz Simas recorded the piano and keyboard segments in New York, which form the harmonic base that supports the vocal tracks.

Vocals by Julia Haughton, Simas’s daughter, emphasise the tribal names with both melody and rhythm. Additional musical depth is provided by Carlos Malta‘s flute recordings from Rio de Janeiro, which lend an ethereal feel to the composition.

Paulo Roberto Brandão, who managed the production in Porto Alegre, played a key role in blending the various elements recorded in different locations. He mixed and mastered the track and enhanced its atmospheric depth with additional keyboard layers in the introduction.

The project also includes a visual component intended to represent the themes of the song through imagery influenced by indigenous art and landscapes. This aspect, in collaboration with visual artists Leon Vilhena and Duda Ásfora, aims to connect more deeply with the heritage of Brazil’s indigenous peoples.
