Horn riffs, tight percussion patterns and clipped guitar lines fire together on Lo Poloko’s “Primo Lychee”, a brisk Latin single from the Rotterdam-based band, released via AudioMaze. Produced and mixed by Jori Collignon, “Primo Lychee” runs on cumbia rhythms, driven by a full brass section: Emilio Tritto on saxophone, Diogo Sousa on trumpet, Juanvi Climent on trombone and Reinaldo Donoso on bass trombone. Carlos Henrique Jacques plays guitar, Giuseppe Bordasco bass, David Gonzalez drums and Javier Infestas percussion. Vocals come from Maria Martinez, Kayo Vanderheggen, Donoso and Jacques.
The band bring Mexican, Chilean, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese backgrounds into what they call their Big Tropical Bang, pulling rock, ska, cumbia, reggae, Balkan and dub into the same live frame. In their own words, “mariachi balkan brass, bombastic latin grooves, rock guitar riffs, hyper energetic percussion … a unique combination of sounds designed to make you dance as if it would be the last day on Earth” – a description that “Primo Lychee” follows closely, with brass lines locked to rapid percussion and call-and-response hooks.
