Daily Discovery: LANGENDORF UNITED – Hope (The Bingert dance remix)

Released on 11 September as a co-release between Sing a Song Fighter and Rosengård Records, “Hope (The Bingert Dance Remix)” appears alongside “Ethiopia Ewedshalehu (Bingert Dance Remix)” on a 7-inch vinyl marking the Ethiopian New Year. Both tracks reinterpret material from Langendorf United’s second album Undercover Beast, reshaped by Daniel Bingert, the band’s saxophonist and keyboardist. Built from the album’s instrumental closing track, the remix transforms its Ethio-jazz phrasing into a sharper, dance-focused arrangement that reflects Bingert’s dual role as performer and producer.

Recorded with the full Langendorf United ensemble — Lina Langendorf (saxophone), Martin Hederos (keys, viola), Ole Morten Vågan (double bass), and Andreas Werliin (drums) — the remix heightens the rhythmic drive of the original, expanding its Ethio-jazz phrasing into a sharper, dance-centred arrangement. Werliin plays hi-hat and congas simultaneously, creating the groove’s core motion, with Vågan’s double bass and Hederos’s sustained keyboard voicings forming its structure. A handmade 1980s-style Afro-synth, built by Bingert, defines the tone with bright, oscillating frequencies.

Bingert describes the work’s concept through a Swedish wordplay: “Hope in Swedish means jump — so jump for hope and hope to jump.” The remix keeps that dual meaning alive in its rhythmic propulsion, translating optimism into motion.

The release arrives one month after Undercover Beast, Langendorf United’s second album, which followed their 2023 debut Yeahno Yowouw Land — winner of Sweden’s Manifest Award for Best Rhythm Album. Led by Langendorf, who studied and performed in Ethiopia and Mali and collaborated with figures such as Alemayehu Eshete, Vieux Farka Touré, and Mulatu Astatke, the group bridges Scandinavian jazz with East African tonalities.

With “Hope (The Bingert Dance Remix)”, they refocus that synthesis toward communal release: a clear reminder that rhythm itself can sustain belief.
