“Free ‘N’ Indie” is a bold invocation shaped between Amsterdam and Nairobi, built on rub-a-dub grooves and ancestral calls.
Dutch producer Jo Bissa — co-founder of INI Movement and one half of Umoja — joins forces with Kenyan multidisciplinary artist Kiuyu for a track sparked by a chance encounter at Nairobi’s Bengatronics Studio. Initiated during the 2019 Wakenya Tuongee project, “Free ‘N’ Indie” fuses Afro-diasporic rhythm with spiritual commentary, channelling Jo Bissa’s percussive, dancefloor-driven style and Kiuyu’s reflective lyricism.
Hand percussion, dub-wise bass and skeletal melodies form a sparse, meditative base. Vocal fragments hover and repeat, transforming minimalist structure into a sonic study of autonomy—personal, political, ancestral.
Shaped over six years across studios and continents, the track previews a wider EP and offers a spiritually grounded alternative to the velocity of contemporary global club culture.
