Daily Discovery: Felipe Orjuela – La Hora del Jejen / Sesiones In-Correcto #45

Recorded live at Teatro Libélula Dorada in Bogotá, “La Hora del Jejen” presents multi-instrumentalist and producer from Bogotá Felipe Orjuela in full command of his hybrid instrumentation, captured as part of Sesiones In-Correcto #45. Joined only by percussionist Sebastián Portilla on timbal, Orjuela layers synthesizers, drum machine, programmed samples, Farfisa organ, caja vallenata, conga, and guacharaca, creating a dense, shifting fabric that moves between Colombian traditional timbres and contemporary electronics.

The title nods to the jejen, a small biting insect notorious in rural Colombia, and the track buzzes with the restless motion implied by its name. Percussive textures from vallenato hand drums and guacharaca scrape cut across sequenced beats, while the Farfisa organ pushes short, stabbing phrases into the mix. Orjuela’s approach is about cumulative rhythmic insistence, with Portilla’s timbal driving the live session into sharp peaks.

Orjuela has established himself as a singular figure in Colombia’s experimental music landscape, working across cumbia, vallenato, and electronic currents with a humour and edge that remain recognisably his own. “La Hora del Jejen” extends that practice into a live context, balancing programmed precision with the grit of acoustic percussion.

The recording underlines the ethos of In-Correcto, a Bogotá collective and label committed to documenting boundary-pushing music in intimate performance. “La Hora del Jejen” stands as one of its most unrelenting entries.
