Greek singer Elsa Mouratidou, known for her expertise in traditional and rebetiko music, interprets the traditional folk song “Ας έμουν παλικάρι” (Wish I Was a Young Lad) with a blend of reverence for its origins and subtle contemporary adjustments. Her arrangement emphasises minimal instrumentation, focusing on strings and her vocal delivery to convey the song’s thematic depth.
The track explores themes of nostalgia and the yearning for a lost youth, with lyrics that depict a young lad with grand aspirations, symbolically shooting arrows at celestial bodies.
Mouratidou, who began her singing career in the Ayia Triada Children’s Choir in Thessaloniki, continues to share her passion for music through performance and teaching. Her latest album, Epsilon & Theta, consists of 12 tracks that delve into themes of love and mortality, influenced by Greek heritage and its surrounding regions.
