Daily Discovery: El Balcón – Granito de Arena

Montreal-based band El Balcón has released “Granito de Arena,” a song reflecting on ephemeral relationships, symbolised by two grains of sand meeting briefly in the vastness of the ocean.

The single features Li Kouri on vocals and accordion, enriching the arrangement. El Balcón is rooted in Son Jarocho, a traditional folk style from Veracruz, Mexico, known for jarana and requinto strings, rhythmic zapateado, and lyrical poetry. Their sound incorporates elements of Eastern European rhythms and melodic structures.

Formed in 2018, El Balcón has toured extensively across Canada and is set to tour Belgium in 2024. Their debut album of original compositions, El Errante, is scheduled for release in spring 2025. The ensemble features Charles Cantin on jarana, Joshua Greenberg on requinto, Nominoë Crawford on violin, Alexandre Marchand on double bass, Nicolas Lafortune on cajón, and Valeria De Marre on tarima and vocals. Together, they create a unique fusion of regional Mexican folk traditions with global musical perspectives.
