“Wanga”, the newest single from Director Shaibu, lands in Afro-pop and Bongo Flava, the Swahili-language pop that has held Tanzanian radio since the late nineties.
Shaibu grew up inland, in Mwanza on Lake Victoria, and trained for the screen at TaSUBa in Bagamoyo, taking director and production manager credits on Tanzanian features including Giza la Mchana and Ndoto za Kitaa. Music and Zanzibar came later…
He built M-Studio at Jambiani on the east coast and released the Zanzibar EP through it in August 2024. This year came Pilau, an eleven-track album named after the spiced rice of the islands, and “Wanga” is the single he has drawn from it.
