Originally released on 8 November 2024, Butcher Brown’s “Montrose Forest” was the first track issued ahead of 2025 full-length on Concord Jazz. A live performance video followed, filmed at High Point Barbershop in Richmond, Virginia. The band described the piece as “an ode to a remote Richmond studio spot off in the woods – nothing but land and peace.”
Based in Richmond, the group comprises Tennishu (trumpet, saxophone), DJ Harrison (keys), Morgan Burrs (guitar), Andrew Randazzo (bass), and Corey Fonville (drums). “Montrose Forest” is arranged without solos, placing emphasis on ensemble phrasing and groove. Rhodes piano, bass, and unhurried drum patterns set the foundation, with guitar and horns folded into the mix rather than spotlighted. The sound draws from 1970s jazz-funk session aesthetics, while staying grounded in the group’s live-first methodology.
The studio version appears on Letters From The Atlantic, released 28 March 2025 via Concord Jazz. Recorded across several Richmond locations and mixed by Alex De Jong, the twelve-track album spans broken beat, R&B, bossa nova, and disco-leaning rhythms while maintaining Butcher Brown’s live-band clarity. Featured guests include Yaya Bey, Melanie Charles, Leanor Wolf, Mia Gladstone, Victoria Victoria, Nicholas Payton, and Neal Francis.
