Daily Discovery: Blanc Du Blanc x Scientist – The Receptive: Harmony of the Stars

Blanc du Blanc and Scientist begin their collaboration with “The Receptive: Harmony of the Stars” via Soul Selects Records, an instrumental piece that merges foundational dub with more airy, electronic elements. Scientist—Hopeton Brown—is one of dub’s defining engineers, known for his era-defining work in late-70s Kingston. Blanc du Blanc is a heteronym for a fluid cast of musicians operating in shadow, with ties to acts like Morphine, Bad Brains, and JRAD. Their approach blends analogue warmth with experimental drift.

Scientist’s trademark approach—live, hands-on mixing and a focus on sonic weight—is present throughout, but it’s layered with Blanc du Blanc’s more abstract contributions. Traditional dub motifs are replaced by filtered synths, ambient textures and subtle dissonance. The result is less about rhythm and more about mood, where structure gives way to tonal drift.

Rather than introducing the forthcoming album Before The Beginning with a statement track, the single sets a tone. It’s a restrained first step, built on mutual trust in the process.
