Atlas Maior is an Austin-based musical ensemble that creates original music by blending jazz, Arab, Turkish and Latin American musical traditions.
In mid-February they released their new album Hadal, which showcases the evolution of the ensemble and features the compositions by oud player Josh Peters and saxophonist Joshua Thomson, deeply influenced by Arab and Turkish maqamat/makamlar modal systems. The album’s diverse instrumental tracks incorporate rhythms from West Africa, Morocco, and the Arabian Peninsula, as well as jazz experimental contexts inspired by 1970s loft jazz and Afrofuturism.
