“Chant for Don Cherry” is the first single from Ancient Infinity Orchestra’s forthcoming album It’s Always About Love, to be released on 26 September via Gondwana Records. Led by bassist and composer Ozzy Moysey, the 15-piece ensemble is based in the North of England and dedicated to communal improvisation rooted in friendship and collective sound.
The track is described by Moysey as a “campfire style” thank-you to Don Cherry, whose music he recalls as carrying “a direct link to the magic”. Piano lines with vivid harmonic colour are placed alongside gently strummed guitars, setting up a simple, open framework in which the ensemble can breathe. The title nods to Cherry’s long history of blending ritual, folk and jazz elements into shared performance.
Ancient Infinity Orchestra’s instrumentation is unusually broad: two double basses, harp, saxophones, clarinets, violin, viola, cello, oboe, flutes, mandolin, congas, piano and drum kit, with bells, shakers and hand percussion scattered for players to pick up in the moment. That set-up allows the group to move from chamber-like textures to large-scale collective energy without losing intimacy.
It’s Always About Love follows their 2022 debut River of Light and continues Moysey’s focus on writing tunes as vessels for improvised exchange. The record is described as an attempt to strip away excess and reach something direct, offering space for each member’s contribution to shine. “There is a need for love and connectedness,” Moysey explains. “You pour the love you have into the music and people listening can feel it.”
“Chant for Don Cherry” sets the tone for the album, positioning Ancient Infinity Orchestra within a lineage of spiritual jazz that balances improvisation with compositional clarity.
