Daily Discovery: Kabaka Pyramid – Jamaica

Kabaka Pyramid’s latest single “Jamaica” plants its flag firmly in celebration of home. Recorded with bassist Craig Higgins, guitarist Shackair McQueen and background vocals from Sherieta Lewis, the track rides the Pon Di Island Riddim with a classic reggae backbone.

The lyrics unfold as a catalogue of Jamaican identity: from national heroes Nanny and Marcus Garvey to Bob Marley, Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce; from Kingston dancehall nights like Uptown Mondays and Weddy Weddy to everyday markers such as Clarks in Brixton, mango trees, ackee, breadfruit and plantain. The chorus refrain “Nuh weh nuh up like Jamaica” (“Nowhere is as good as Jamaica”) underlines the message, framing the island as unmatched in culture, history and spirit.

Coming after his Grammy-winning album The Kalling, this release shifts tone from confrontation to homage, reaffirming Kabaka’s place as both a chronicler and celebrant of Jamaica’s story.
