Daily Discovery: Coletivo Carambola – Corre Atrás

Coletivo Carambola singer Ana Queiroz lays it all out on “Corre Atrás”: fifty bills on the table, no change left once they’re paid, and the rich still asking for more while they splash on Christian Dior to hide the smell of sweat. The title means “run after it” in Portuguese, and the chorus says what to chase: your money, before it runs off.

The collective comes from Uberlândia, in the Triângulo Mineiro corner of Minas Gerais in south-eastern Brazil. For five years they have been mixing rap, R&B and MPB, Brazilian popular music, and taking it on stage with percussion, horns and guitar. Queiroz leads the core trio alongside producer and DJ Hyper Noise and Philipim, a composer and DJ who has worked the alternative scene for more than twenty years and wrote this song. On stage they slip their own versions of Criolo, Emicida and Seu Jorge in among the originals.

The song comes second on Acende o Incenso, the twelve-track album they put out themselves on 16 August. The record takes on inequality, racism and sexism and still makes room to celebrate. Over a funky R&B beat from producer Eldorado Beats, Queiroz raps in a steady, measured flow. Guest Mauricio Winckler, one of four Triângulo Mineiro musicians on the album, adds harmonica and guitar. DJ Japa has since cut the track together with São Paulo rapper Kamau on a remix.
