Prince Alla has been singing roots since the 1970s, and on “Jah Is My Rock” his voice sits over a riddim that came together on the Spanish coast. Born Keith Blake in Kingston in 1950, he made his name with Bertram Brown‘s Freedom Sounds label, cutting “Stone” over a King Tubby dub mix and following it with “Bucket Bottom“. That same open-throated, declamatory delivery runs through this one too, and the title leans on the old Psalm line about God as a rock.

The riddim is the work of Hal C, the Alicante producer Mario Coloma, who came up through the Barcelona reggae scene and now runs Piramid Records. He laid the track down at his own studio, then brought in players from across the map to finish it. Karl Wright cut the drums in the United States, Roberto Sánchez handled the backing vocals at his A-Lone Ark Muzik Studio in Santander, and Danny Trees mixed and mastered. It lands as the label’s fourth 7″, a black-vinyl 45 in a full-colour sleeve, with a dub of the rhythm on the flip.
