Saudade is usually a backward-facing feeling, a longing for what has passed. Matu Miranda points it the other way. On “Céu Azulzin” the Brazilian singer and guitarist treats that longing as forward motion, a pull toward somewhere rather than a mourning for something lost.

Miranda’s own writing pulls MPB together with jazz, soul and the music of the Northeast. He shares “Céu Azulzin” with Josyara, who comes from Juazeiro in Bahia, the town that raised João Gilberto, and plays with a percussive right hand rooted in the Afro-Brazilian music of the Bahian Recôncavo. Producer Leonardo Marques recorded it at his Ilha do Corvo studio, keeping the sound warm and organic, the two guitars and voices held close together.

“Céu Azulzin” is the second single from Apuama, out 4 September, an album built as a travel diary about making a home while staying in motion. The single holds one piece of that journey: the kind of home you carry with you instead of returning to.
