Drawing on the Australian Aboriginal concept of “songlines”, Ghanaian four-time GRAMMY nominee Rocky Dawuni releases “I Got A Song”, a collaborative single featuring three-time GRAMMY-winning Jamaican artist Cedella Marley, distributed by AQUARIAN Records and Tuff Gong International. Dawuni discovered the “songlines” philosophy — oral pathways of knowledge passed through generations that connect individuals to ancestral lands — during visits with Aboriginal communities on a recent Australian tour.
“Music is the heartbeat of global connection,” Dawuni says. “This song, and having the opportunity to collaborate with Cedella, honors that spirit while invoking a call for harmony, identity, and purpose.” Recorded at Hen House Studios in Venice, California, the single features Santa Davis (drums, formerly with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh), John McKnight (bass and guitar, known for work with Ben Harper and Fishbone), and Anthony Brewster (keyboards, who has played with Chali 2na and Citizen Cope). Harlan Steinberger engineered the sessions; Bob Riddim, who mixed Dawuni’s GRAMMY-nominated Neva Bow Down, handled the mix.
Both artists bring decades of cultural work to the collaboration. Marley serves as managing director of the Bob & Rita Marley Foundations and as Ambassador for the Basketball Association of Jamaica. Dawuni has been a UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment for Africa since 2018, using his platform to address climate change and social justice while sharing stages with Stevie Wonder, Angelique Kidjo, Alpha Blondy, and John Legend.
The single was originally released on 18 July 2025. Its new animated lyric video, Dawuni’s first, was created by motion designer Ellen Wood. Stream “I Got A Song” HERE
