Daily Discovery: JonQuan – Gwan Walk

“Gwan Walk” brings Virginia producer JonQuan together with Jamaican singer Rik Jam, in a Jamaica–United States link shaped by roots-reggae production and singjay phrasing.

Released on 14 November via Easy Start Records, the single is produced and mixed by JonQuan and mastered by JasonJockoRandall. The recording places JonQuan’s vintage-focused studio work beside Rik Jam’s present-day vocal style, creating a line between earlier Jamaican recording practice and current roots output.

The track builds its message through repetition, with the title phrase — patois for “going to walk” — representing both forward motion and spiritual perseverance. Rik Jam frames this determination through Psalm 23 imagery and Rastafarian resistance language, invoking “Babylon” to name systems of oppression, whilst JonQuan’s production channels 1970s roots warmth to bridge historical form and contemporary struggle.

JonQuan began releasing singles in 2021 and has since built a presence across the reggae underground, including 2024 collaborations with Ranking Joe and Linval Thompson. His earlier work spans DJ sets, vinyl collecting, keyboard duties with Buddha Council and the creation of Easy Star Presents: JonQuan & Associates, where he studies ska, rocksteady, reggae and dub.

Rik Jam has moved steadily since debuting with “Love Never Lost” in 2018. His momentum continued through the release of his 2025 full-length THE GENESIS and extensive touring in the United States supporting Rebelution.
