Moscow’s cinematic funk collective The Diasonics unveil “Larks”, their third single from the forthcoming album Ornithology, due 3 October on Record Kicks. Following “Oriole” and “Chickadee”, both playlisted on BBC 6, FIP Radio France, and KEXP, “Larks” deepens the group’s avian concept with a synth-led composition that folds voice into their instrumental framework for the first time.
The track takes its name from a Moscow suburb and railway station, anchoring the title in a sense of place. Its opening vocal motif provided the spark for the bird-themed direction of Ornithology, with vintage synthesizers mimicking birdsong woven into taut guitar, bass, percussion, and keys. The result is a funk sequence that hovers between cinematic sweep and raw groove.
Formed in 2019, The Diasonics include Daniil Lutsenko on guitar, Kamil Gazizov on keyboards, Maksim Brusov on bass, Anton Moskvin on drums and Alexander Shingaling on percussion. Their debut Origin of Forms (2022), mixed by Henry Jenkins of Surprise Chef, sold out quickly and was named Library Music Album of the Year by PopMatters. With Ornithology, recorded at Studio 23 in a former Soviet lamp factory, they expand their analogue soul vocabulary through synthesizers, Eastern-European-infused motifs and vocal textures.
