Based in Edmonton, Alberta, The Mbira Renaissance Band build their sound around the traditional mbira of Zimbabwe, placing it at the centre of “Toridza Mbira”. The track extends the cyclical resonance of the instrument into a contemporary frame, shaped by guitar, keyboard, brass, bass, and percussion. The ensemble’s balance of interlocking mbira lines with improvisatory brass phrasing and jazz-informed rhythm points directly to their identity as an afro-fusion group rooted in both Shona tradition and modern Canadian performance circuits.
Founded in 2013 by Chaka Zinyemba and James Stuart, the band has developed through a wide range of Canadian stages. Their music reflects both Zimbabwean heritage and the eclectic backgrounds of its members, spanning jazz, reggae, and rock. The energy of “Toridza Mbira” aligns with their reputation for live sets that push audiences to their feet.
Following the 2018 album Famba, produced by JUNO nominee Scott Franchuk, the group is preparing its third studio release with JUNO-winning producer Brad Smith, scheduled for later this year.
