Mariaa Siga and Oddy have collaborated on the EP Immigration, released by Odyssée Records, which explores the theme of immigration through five distinct versions of the same song.
The lyrics poignantly depict the challenges and emotional burdens faced by young Africans as they undertake dangerous journeys in search of a better life, often resulting in tragic outcomes at sea. Each track on the EP features unique mixes and arrangements, including dub interpretations by Oddy and Rascat, an intimate acoustic version, and a vibrant nyahbinghi version.
Mariaa Siga, often described as the “vocal pearl of Casamance,” is a Senegalese artist known for her soulful voice and eclectic musical style. She blends West African Jola rhythms with elements of blues, folk-jazz, and roots-reggae, vividly conveying the intense experiences of African youth and shedding light on the critical issue of immigration with deep emotional resonance.
