Listen to the latest single extracted from Hatis Noit‘s debut album Aura released via Erased Tapes.

Inspired by a transformative encounter with Buddhist chants in Nepal at sixteen, the Japanese voice artist embraces the primal power of the human voice. The name “Hatis Noit” from Japanese folklore symbolises the lotus flower’s stem connecting the living and spirit worlds. Music, for her, serves as a bridge to the netherworld, evoking memories and transporting listeners.

Recorded in Berlin, Aura features songs created solely with her voice, including a tribute to lives lost in the 2011 tsunami. The final touches in East London, with engineer Marta Salogni, highlight the significance of a local church’s ambience, bringing the music to life amidst pandemic challenges.

The album title, drawing from philosopher Walter Benjamin, emphasises the essence of art in its original form.

“During the pandemic, I really struggled. As a singer, I’m not very good at working on the computer. I much prefer doing live performances in physical spaces. Being with people, sharing the same space with them and feeling the atmosphere and energy of that moment, inspires me every time. To me art is that — that shared moment” (Hatis Noit)
