Twenty years after Fela Kuti‘s death, afrobeat is more alive than ever. Literally every continent has afrobeat bands and it’s safe to say there are more than a hundred bands spread over fifty countries. Mukambo created “Global Afrobeat Movement” with the aim of promoting the current global afrobeat scene, prompting NYP Records to ask Mukambo to compile the best contemporary afrobeat. This week’s Radio Mukambo podcast is a sneak preview of that compilation, coming out on Friday 2/10: 17 afrobeat bands and producers from 15 different countries in all continents.
Including Dele Sosimi and BANTU from Nigeria, Fanga, Professor Wouassa, London Afrobeat Collective, Ogun Afrobeat, Ojibo Afrobeat, They Must Be Crazy from Europe, JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra from Japan, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra from Australia, IFÁ & Dr. Drumah from Brazil.
