ORCHESTRA OF SAMPLES
Each month Rhythm Passport dips into the fascinating blog of ethno-sampling mavericks Addictive TV and their global music project Orchestra of Samples.
Their acclaimed live AV show is a unique musical journey without borders, connecting cultures and bringing musicians and instruments together from around the world through sampling recording sessions with hundreds of musicians. For over a decade the group have filmed more than 300 performing artists in 30 countries, including in Senegal, Kazakhstan, China, Indonesia, Colombia, Brazil, India and many more, ingeniously sampling and splicing the samples together to create new music of extraordinary fusions.
“We filmed musicians improvising on all manner of instruments” explains creative director Graham Daniels, “then, like a huge jigsaw puzzle, we look for samples that fit together, taking the instruments to a new musical space”.
Described by Cerys Matthews as “beautiful stuff, and a rather fascinating project” on her BBC 6 Music radio show, Orchestra of Samples has been called “ingenious and compelling” by The Times and “a glimpse into the very essence of music” by Cultured Vultures. This 60 second video explains it all!
