Daily Discovery: Wild Mushrooms – The Squirrel

On 16th October, Yunnan-based band Wild Mushrooms introduced their first album, Under the Dragon Tree via Sea of Wood Records. The group, dedicated to preserving the musical heritage of the Hani people, chose to feature predominantly Hani language in their tracks, resisting the shift towards Mandarin. The album uniquely blends traditional Hani music with new, original compositions by the band.

Central to Hani culture is the dragon tree, a sacred symbol located near each village for ritual practices. This emblem influences both the title and the thematic direction of the album, merging ancient traditions with contemporary life influences. Under the Dragon Tree combines indeed traditional spirit-calling rituals with energetic dance tracks, enhanced by psychedelic rock and pop elements, to offer a fresh perspective on the Hani’s spiritual practices.

Wild Mushrooms released ‘Huba’ (The Squirrel) as the first single from their album, offering a direct insight into the rhythmic heart of nature. The song distinguishes itself with energetic guitar riffs that illustrates the persistent, natural cycles fundamental to Hani folklore, wrapped in an original sound that brings a new dimension to traditional themes
