The Brother Moves On, a South African jazz collective, performed a live session in the Brownswood Basement for Worldwide FM. They played songs off of their latest album, $/He Who Feeds You Owns You, which was released on Shabaka Hutchings‘ label, Native Rebel Recordings.
The band draws from the past, present, and future, using their music to heal and challenge. The album title comes from a speech by pan-African revolutionary Thomas Sankara, and the band uses their lyrics to protest in a subtle, velvet-glove manner.
The album is a remarkable achievement, showcasing the band’s peak performance and synchronicity, and they skilfully blend various influences into their afro-jazz sound.
