Taroug, the solo project of drummer and electronic music producer Tarek Zarroug, with roots in the Tunisian desert suburbs and upbringing in Germany, continues to evolve musically.
After his 2020 EP Perpetual and remixes for notable artists like Archive, Taroug’s debut album draws inspiration from Penrose tiling, exploring themes of change and transformation. The LP, titled Darts & Kites, combines styles into a beautiful sonic landscape, featuring experimental soundscapes with oriental influences, dark beats, and hypnotic vocals. It includes contributions from other artists, like Beate Wolff on cello and Benedikt Koch on saxophone.
Highlights include the single “Queen of Carthage,” featuring vocals by Niklas Genschel and saz playing by Abdallah Abozekry.
The album artwork, a collaboration with designer Marie Brosius, reflects the album’s intricate content.
