Belgian oud player Tristan Driessens leads the ensemble Soolmaan, featuring musicians Nathan Daems, Christos Barbas, Annemie Osborne, Andrea Piccioni, and Levent Yildirim. Their latest single, “Mashrab The Madman,” previews their upcoming album, Kashgul, set for release on the 24th of January, 2025 under Zephyrus Music. The track showcases a rich fusion of musical styles, spanning from the Bosphorus to India, and incorporates a diverse array of instruments including flute, sax, ney, cello, piano, and tamburello, crafting a unique sound that pushes the boundaries of traditional and contemporary music.
The upcoming album “Kashgul” will continue this exploration of diverse musical styles, drawing from Ottoman maqam, Indian raga, and Anatolian folk music, woven together with a modern approach to modal music. This project showcases Driessens’ extensive engagement with different musical cultures, which is further enriched by his classical training and innovative sound experiments.
Ahead of the album’s release, the Soolmaan Quartet will perform in Belgium, with shows at CC De Zwaneberg on the 20th of November and at BOZAR, Brussels, on the 22nd of November.
