Bolero is built on longing. On “CTRL Z”, Sonora Tukukuy take that emotional core and set it over son rhythm and cumbia’s double beat, with synthesisers running through the arrangement. The song is written as a love declaration, with bolero vocal phrasing over son percussion patterns and synth lines alongside.
The six-piece formed out of long friendships and bands that go back to the late 1990s in Miami’s independent scene. Peruvians Gabriel Ayala and Roberto Taninaka, Venezuelan Alex Izaguirre, Colombians Alejo Angee and Jorge Moreno, and Argentinian Daniel “Dito” Reschigna bring experience from local acts including Minimal, Estacion Local, Soniko, Aura Band and Panasonicos. Cumbia is their usual ground. On “CTRL Z” that also takes in bolero and son.
The band came up in Miami’s southwest suburbs, including Cutler Bay and Homestead, and now work out of warehouse spaces in Allapattah. Six singles in, with a debut album coming from Miami artist Delusion Bay, and this is the one where cumbia steps back and bolero and son take over.
