Sankara Project is a musical collective formed by Lola and David from Torrejón, a city near Madrid, which blends reggae, dancehall, African and Latin rhythms, and electronic music to create socially and politically charged songs with the goal of stirring consciousness and contributing to transforming reality through music.
Their single, “Madrid”, inspired by a work by Spanish poet and dramatist Miguel Hernández, continues this trend, tackling issues of inequality, gentrification, and social injustice in the city.
The duo draws inspiration from a variety of genres and cultures, including Africa, and believes that music is a powerful tool for communication and change. The group’s name, Sankara Project, honours Thomas Sankara, the former president of Burkina Faso who championed his country’s independence and progress before being assassinated in 1987.
