Daily Discovery: Rema – KELEBU

Rema’s new single “Kelebu” is built for the floor. Released 2 September with a Lagos-shot video directed by Perliks and Nouvelle Production House, the track rides brisk percussion and looped vocal calls that recall the party music Rema says he grew up with in Benin City — Caribbean and Francophone dance records where repetition mattered more than language. “They just kept repeating one word with a fantastic instrumental to back it up, and we all danced,” he explained.

Ahead of the release, Rema launched a global dance challenge that quickly spread online. The POP Boys’ routine emerged as the winner and now sits at the centre of the video, which has already amassed over 135 million views. Their choreography locks tightly to the track’s clipped drum pattern and chant-like refrain, proof of how well “Kelebu” translates from stream to street.

The single arrives after Rema’s HEIS tour, which sold out Madison Square Garden, The O2 and Accor Arena, confirming his position as one of afrobeats’ most internationally visible figure. Yet “Kelebu” looks inward as much as outward, reviving the social side of afrobeats: movement, sweat, and collective release.
