“Balaton,” a track by Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra (PASO) featuring Grammy-winning producer Victor Rice, comes from their latest album, Heritage (On Bartók’s Path). Inspired by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, this album merges Hungarian folk with Caribbean ska, reggae, and dub. Recorded in Budapest in 2022, it showcases traditional Hungarian instruments like violin, hurdy-gurdy and cimbalom and includes guest vocals by Fanni Nádasdy.
The album has led to follow-up singles “Balaton DUB” and “Hillyei DUB,” where Rice revisits tracks to produce dub versions, showcasing the live mixing process in accompanying videos.
PASO are known for their vibrant energy and Eastern European roots featuring a discography including six full-length albums and performances across nearly 30 countries. The current lineup, stable since 2018, includes four original members, maintaining the band’s presence on the global music stage.
