Ounine Pawoap, deputy chief of the Pombei Tribe in northern New Caledonia and bandleader of the Kanak group A7KJ, has released his debut solo album Yéby Yéby collaborating with Marcus Gad and his band Tribe.
The album offers a unique fusion of Kanak culture and reggae, with 12 tracks sung primarily in Cémuhi, Pawoap’s native language, and also in French to reach a broader audience on “Le Caillou” (New Caledonia). Recorded in both France and New Caledonia, Yéby Yéby incorporates traditional Kanak instruments such as the bwanjep (bark beater), bamboo percussion, and fern leaves, adding an authentic Pacific flavour to the reggae sound.
The title track conveys Pawoap’s mix of sadness and hope for his people during difficult times. Through his music, he aims to emphasise the importance of unity and pride in Kanak identity, delivering a powerful message of resilience and cultural preservation.
