On the 27th of July, Okwy Osadebe and the Highlife Soundmakers enthralled audiences at Grand Performances in downtown Los Angeles, known for its free outdoor concerts since 1986. This event was part of the venue’s 38th Summer Season.
Continuing his father Chief Osita Osadebe’s legacy—a seminal figure in Eastern Nigerian highlife music—Okwy upheld the genre’s traditions with vibrant guitar and horn arrangements. His dynamic stage presence and the colourful visuals emphasised the lasting appeal and cultural richness of highlife music, a genre blending traditional Igbo sounds with jazz and Caribbean influences, rooted in early 20th-century West Africa.
