Daily Discovery: Mina & Bryte – Pockets

Mina & Bryte keep things fast and direct on “Pockets”, a 150 bpm single released on Earth Kicks on 29 January. Mina builds the track from classic Ghanaian rhythm patterns and a distorted early-dubstep bassline. The single follows their joint EP Abeka Bugatti and stays with the Afro-electro-rap direction they have developed together.

Bryte switches between Ga and English on money and everyday life in Accra, mixing place names, food and cash talk with surreal wordplay and images drawn straight from street life.

Mina and Bryte first met in Accra in 2017 and have since built a live and studio partnership that runs between Ghana and London, with sets at Glastonbury, Primavera Sounds, Nyege Nyege Festival, the Jazz Cafe and Village Underground. Their releases join kuduro, afrobeat, dancehall and UK club styles, and Bryte’s delivery in Ga keeps Greater Accra references at the core of the project.

The video for “Pockets” was filmed in Nairobi’s central business district with dancers Samuel Ouma Omondi, Amie Aime, Neville The Legitz, Manouver The Legitz, Maggy and Owen The Legitz, linking the single to the Nairobi dance community as well.
