Daily Discovery: Malika Kaita – Base ti tu wa!

“Base ti tu wa!” introduces Malika Kaita’s voice in full stride, set against horn arrangements and rhythm section writing that draw equally from jazz phrasing and West African cadence. The song rests on interlocking percussion patterns, with brass figures cutting through her lines to emphasise contrast and drive.

Kaita, born in Switzerland with Ghanaian heritage, is rooted in jazz but has consistently extended her practice to afrobeat and West African traditions. Her training at the Lucerne School of Music sharpened her improvisational fluency, while collaborations in New York, Brazil, and Ghana deepened her command of phrasing across languages and styles. In recent months she has also appeared alongside kologo player Stevo Atambire, affirming her position in a wider Afro-diasporic dialogue.

“Base ti tu wa!” is the second single from her forthcoming debut album T’ua, scheduled for release later this year.
