“Farafina Mousso,” meaning “African Woman” in Bambara, is a new collaborative single by Belgian-Cameroonian singer/songwriter Lubiana and French-Rwandan rapper Gaël Faye. The song serves as an ode to African women—daughters, sisters, mothers, and warriors—celebrating their strength, resilience, and vital roles in society.
Featured on Lubiana’s upcoming album Terre Rouge, set for release on the 25th of October, the track emphasises the deep connection between women and nature. It suggests that if the earth, sea, and moon are feminine, then divinity itself could be perceived as a woman. The lyrics call for respect and recognition, highlighting women’s power and influence across generations.
Lubiana is known for her mastery of the kora, a traditional West African instrument typically played by men. Her music blends upbeat pop with West and Central African rhythms, as showcased in her debut album Beloved. Playing the kora has helped her reconnect with her roots and embrace her mixed heritage. Gaël Faye, acclaimed for his literary work Small Country and his albums Pili Pili Sur un Croissant au Beurre and Rythmes et Botanique, contributes his poignant storytelling and musical versatility to the collaboration. Together, they infuse “Farafina Mousso” with a powerful message honouring and empowering African women.
