France-based Afro-fusion band Kankélé, rooted in Burkina Faso, unveils their latest single, “Kanou,” a preview of their upcoming second album Bala Groove set for release in early 2025.
Named after the Bambara word for “love,” the track seamlessly combines Afro-blues and funk with traditional West African rhythms. Sung in Bambara, Soussou, Wolof, and Spanish, Kanou highlights the band’s unique Mandé ni Wassolo Bala Groove style, led by the virtuoso Oumarou Bambara, also known as Mandela.
The song fuses the melodic warmth of balafons and kamele n’goni with sharp basslines and percussions, embodying the band’s mission of bringing a fresher perspective on Western Africa traditions.
