Daily Discovery: Espanglish – Como Tú

“Como Tú” is a song about laughter and the bond you have with someone who understands your jokes. Mexican band Espanglish present it as a celebration of one of the strongest links in any relationship: a shared sense of humour. The lyric turns on a single idea, repeated as “Como tú no hay nadie que me entienda / Y que comprenda mi sentido del humor / No hay nadie mejor” (“Like you there is no one who understands me / and understands my sense of humour / there is no one better”). Released on 6 June 2025, the track is a mid-tempo pop en español single built for dancing, carried by a clear vocal line and percussion shaped by Afro-Latin and tropical rhythm.

Espanglish began as a duo and now perform as a four-piece: Lisette Martell on vocals, Alfredo Fernández on ukulele and vocals, Pascual Poctzin on cajón and percussion, and Karla Molkovich on acoustic and electric bass. Across their catalogue they describe their music as a mix of traditional Mexican styles, twentieth-century Black music and electronic production, a combination they sometimes summarise as tropipop or “funklore“. The band are rooted in Mexican forms such as son veracruzano, huapango and cumbia, using instruments like jarana, ukulele, cajón, double bass, synthesisers, loops and drum machines, with each release taking a different configuration of that toolkit. Their lyrics move between Spanish and English with the same intention as the music: to remove borders between genres.

“Como Tú” sits within a recent run of singles and live recordings that includes “Rosa Pastel”, the En Vivo Desde El Balneario EP and earlier songs such as “Sombras” and “Voy Al Mar”, showing how their studio work now alternates with live sessions and collaborations. This path has taken Espanglish into international festival and showcase circuits, including Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato, Japan Cumbia Festival in Tokyo, Circulart in Medellín, Carnaval del Sol in Vancouver and the Gwangju Busking World Cup in South Korea.
