Daily Discovery: Brazzmatazz – Walk The Plank

Released on 13 March, “Walk The Plank” pushes Brazzmatazz’s steampunk brass world into full pirate mode. The second single from the upcoming album Crank Up The Pressure was written by baritone saxophonist Mathias Van Severen and arranged with musical director Sanne Werkers, while Van Severen and trombonist Pieter Verraes take the featured solos. Snare drum, bass drum and percussion keep the track marching underneath stacked brass lines, giving the whole arrangement the blunt force of a street-band charge.

Brazzmatazz work between New Orleans grooves, Balkan rhythms, funk, drum and bass and heavy beats, with a lineup incudling four trumpets, two trombones, four alto saxophones, two tenor saxophones, two baritone saxophones, three bass tubas, snare drum, bass drum and percussion. Their live shows are full theatrical affairs: costumes, steam-powered stage props, immersive storytelling — and the video for “Walk The Plank” follows that logic, with the band roaming the docks like musical privateers scouting for a ship to seize.
