Daily Discovery: Bahati Mabanza – Benga DJ

French-Congolese singer Bahati Mabanza introduces his second single “Benga DJ” with the words “ndombolo to the world man”, tying it directly to the Congolese dance music style that emerged in Kinshasa in the late 1990s, known for fast rhythms and a specific hip-driven dance.

Born in 2005 in Savigny-le-Temple, France, he grew up listening to Michael Jackson, Papa Wemba, Snoop Dogg and Rihanna, and in 2024 he stepped out with debut single “Call Me…(everytime)“, an amapiano-meets-pop-and-R&B track. With “Benga DJ” he moves from that amapiano-led debut towards Afro-pop that connects more openly to Congolese dance music.

The title “Benga DJ” refers to a guitar-driven East African popular music style and to DJ culture. After the release, on 12 February, he has already announced plans to return to amapiano for his next single.
