Daily Discovery: AfriCali – One Thousand Songs

AfriCali’s “One Thousand Songs,” from the album AfroLight released on 21st May by Tokyo Dawn Records, is an electrifying blend of dub, Afro-soul, West Coast psych-rock, hip-hop, and evocative storytelling.

The track honours the late Naresh Michael, a Sacramento-based musician and songwriter renowned for his unique tango-hip-hop fusion. A multi-instrumentalist skilled on the bandoneon and guitar, who’s expressive style infused the song with emotional depth.

Founded in 2010 by MC Eyezon and keyboardist Nico Georis, AfriCali has collaborated with artists like Talib Kweli and Brian Wilson. Their latest album AfroLight delivers a kaleidoscopic soundscape rooted in afrobeat, soulful blues, roots reggae, and the hypnotic rhythms of 1970s Ethiopian music.
