Daily Discovery: Sixela x Madala Kunene – uMvelinqangi (Sixela Remix)

Sixela’s remix of “uMvelinqangi” brings a fresh take on Madala Kunene’s Zulu folk song, originally composed as a spiritual plea for forgiveness. Kunene, a major figure in South African music, is known for his trance-like guitar style, blending African blues with maskandi rhythms. Sung in isiZulu, the track reflects a deep connection to ancestral traditions, with Kunene’s guitar driving its meditative and spiritual essence.

In this version, Swiss guitarist and producer Carlo Menet, known Sixela, adds haunting beats and rhythmic grooves, enhancing the atmosphere while keeping the raw acoustic core intact. His production integrates elements of blues and world music, offering a modern reinterpretation that honours the song’s original significance.

The remix is part of Madala Kunene – Remixes 2024 Reel Three, an EP celebrating Kunene’s legacy. Starting as a street performer in Durban, Kunene, also called the “King of the Zulu guitar,” developed his Madalaline style, a unique blend of maskandi, African blues, and rock. The EP features seven remixes by five producers, showcasing diverse approaches and highlighting his enduring influence on African music.
